HC Deb 11 April 1972 vol 834 c136W
25. Mrs. Knight

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he intends to take to remedy the situation in Birmingham with regard to the length of the waiting list of children needing hospital treatment in ear, nose and throat wards.

Mr. Alison

The general shortage of acute beds in the Birmingham area, which affects ear, nose and throat departments in common with other specialty departments, can only be remedied in the long run by the major programme of capital building works which the regional hospital board has in hand. Schemes already started or due to begin shortly at East Birmingham Hospital, Hallam Hospital, West Bromwich, and Good Hope Hospital are intended to relieve pressure on existing ear, nose and throat beds either directly or indirectly.
