HC Deb 11 April 1972 vol 834 c158W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is aware of the increased expenses incurred by disabled people and by employers in the employment of the disabled; if he will review the financial provisions either to the disabled or the employers to facilitate the employment of disabled people; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The great majority of disabled people are capable of ordinary employment on their merits. Special financial provisions to facilitate such employment would in general therefore be unnecessary and undesirable. However, my Department operates schemes whereby severely disabled persons may be helped to take up ordinary employment by financial assistance towards the cost of their daily travel to work, if this is excessive, and by the indefinite loan of special aids or equipment. These schemes are kept under regular review.
