HC Deb 11 April 1972 vol 834 cc143-4W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what counterparts the artificial liver machine being developed at King's College Hospital, London, has in other parts of England and Wales; and what is his estimate of the number of patients who could be treated for liver failure on one such machine in one year.

Mr. Alison

None so far as I am aware. Much work would be needed to establish whether the theoretical concept of artificial liver support can be applied in practice. It is therefore premature to estimate how many patients could be treated.
