Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will organise an independent investigation into how and why Daniel Burns, a man sentenced to nine years imprisonment, was, whilst serving his sentence in Wakefield Prison Hostel, allowed to purchase a car and a rifle; and what action he proposes to take to tighten up prison discipline in general and in this prison in particular.
§ Mr. CarlisleThe prisoner, who was due for release on 30th August, 1971, secured these articles without the knowledge of prison staff, while temporarily released from custody under the pre-release employment scheme. He has been dealt with by the courts on charges arising out of his possession of the rifle.
