§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many special investigators are now employed by his Department; what is their present annual cost in salaries; and how much public expenditure they are estimated to have saved as a result of their work during the last year.
§ Mr. DeanThe number of special investigators now employed in my Department is 265 at an average annual salary cost of £2,200 per investigator.
An exact calculation of savings is not possible, but in 1970—when the average number of investigators employed was 200W 226—the estimated annual saving was just over £8,000 per investigator.
