HC Deb 30 November 1971 vol 827 cc92-3W
Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of the employment position in the South-West, if he will now authorise further capital spending by various authorities on the rebuilding of secondary schools which still need modernising, and replacement of out of date hospitals; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I have nothing to add to what my right hon. Friend said in his speech in the House on 23rd November. All proposals by local education and health authorities for projects in the assisted areas in the South-West which could be substantially completed by March, 1973, were included in the £200 million programme of capital works and housing improvement grants which he referred to. The programmes for capital expenditure on education and health are set out in Cmnd. 4829. Responsibility for the control of these programmes rests with my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Education and Science and Social Services.—[Vol. 826, c. 1160.]

Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much will the southwest of England receive from his recent capital expenditure announcement.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

About £4 million.
