HC Deb 30 November 1971 vol 827 cc79-80W
Mr. Charles R. Morris

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will make a statement on the progress made in reproducing and recreating the Changi murals for inclusion in a Far East Land Forces Chapel of Remembrance in the United Kingdom.

Lord Balniel

The Singapore Ministry of Defence has informed the British High Commission that it has decided to take over the murals with the intention finally of using these as part of a static display. In the meantime, the Ministry will take over and close the room in which the murals are housed and will take the necessary action to maintain and keep the murals in good condition.

One of the original murals, which was repainted on hardboard by the artist in 1969, has been shipped to the United Kingdom and placed in the Garrison Church, Larkhill.

In view of these arrangements it is not now proposed to reproduce the Changi murals in the Garrison Church at Aldershot.
