Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what financial requests he has received from the Newport Education Authority which would have permitted it to start schemes of improvement or replacement of maintained primary and secondary schools for the years 1972–73 and 1973–74; what amounts were requested for each type of school; and what amounts has he now authorised it to spend on each type of school for each of the years concerned.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what financial requests he has received from the Glamorgan Education Authority which would have permitted it to start schemes of improvement or replacement of maintained primary and secondary schools for the years 1972–73 and 1973–74; what amounts were requested for each type of school; and what amounts he has now authorised it to spend on each type of school for each of the years concerned.

For starts in 1972–73 the authority submitted schemes involving nine primary schools at a cost of £891,861 and two secondary schools at a cost of £710,527. Those schemes authorised related to five primary schools at a cost of £482,699 and one secondary school at a cost of £259,141.

For 1973–74 schemes were submitted involving 19 primary schools at a cost of £1,463,702 and those authorised covered 10 primary schools at a cost of £767,136. I will send the hon. Member a detailed breakdown of these figures.
