Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what amount of lost time would have been saved during 1970 if employment placings had, on average, been effected in each case 24 hours earlier.

Mr. Dudley Smith

In the 12 months ending on 2nd December, 1970, the Employment Service placed some 1,350,000 unemployed adults. Information is not available as to the numbers of young per- sons who were unemployed at the time they were placed by the Youth Employment Service. It is not possible to say what time would be saved for production.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many placings were effected through employment exchanges during 1970.

During the period 3rd December, 1969, to 2nd December, 1970, 1,442,081 adult placings were made through employment exchanges.
