HC Deb 28 May 1971 vol 818 cc242-3W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will list the percentage of wholly unemployed under 40 years of age registered in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively, to the latest convenient date;

(2) what was the percentage of wholly unemployed under 40 years of age registered in the United Kingdom at 11th January, 1971.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The numbers registered as wholly unemployed in Great Britain, but not in Northern Ireland, are analysed by age in January and July each year. The following table shows for England, Scotland, Wales and Great Britain the proportions under 40 years of age:

Number under 40 years of age as proportions of all registered wholly unemployed persons at 11th January, 1971.
Per cent.
England 50.9
Scotland 59.6
Wales 54.0
Great Britain 52.6

Comparable figures for Northern Ireland are not available.
