Mr. Wilkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on his recent meeting with Mr. Mirza Ahmad, economic adviser to President Yahya Khan of Pakistan, about aid to Pakistan and on the conclusions reached.

Mr. Anthony Royle

Mr. Mirza Muzaffar Ahmad called on my right hon. Friend on the afternoon of 19th May. They discussed the political and economic situation in Pakistan. Mr. Ahmad emphasised President Yahya Khan's determination to seek an early political solution to Pakistan's internal political difficulties. My right hon. Friend welcomed this and expressed Her Majesty's Government's concern at the situation. Mr. Ahmad stressed Pakistan's need for international support in the provision both of relief and of financial assistance in co-operation with the United Nations and with friendly countries. My right hon. Friend made clear Her Majesty's Government's attitude on the same lines as he has done in this House.
