HC Deb 25 May 1971 vol 818 cc118-9W
Mr. Oswald

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what increases in staff he expects to make to deal with the increased unemployment in the Edinburgh, Leith and Portobello employment exchange areas.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The system of staffing individual local offices of my Department allows for adjustments—upwards or downwards—to deal with changes in volumes of work which depend on the level of unemployment. This will enable the employment exchanges concerned to be appropriately staffed.

Mr. Oswald

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will extend to Edinburgh's employment exchanges the new self-service job-finding techniques installed in Tottenham on 12th May, 1971.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The introduction of full self-service methods in Edinburgh has been considered, but the present employment exchange premises there are not suitable.

A modified arrangement is in operation in the office at 19, Rose Street, Edinburgh, which enables women callers to scrutinise vacancies prior to interview.
