HL Deb 06 May 1971 vol 318 cc615-6WA
THE EARL OF MANSFIELD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will consider officially reviving the historic names of "florin"

Their Lordships divided: Contents, 76; Not-Contents, 26.

and "shilling" for the present coins of 10 and 5 new pence, particularly as so many of the present florins and shillings remain in circulation.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (EARL JELLICOE)

No. The new currency has two units only: the pound sterling and the new penny, and there may be confusion if names associated with the intermediate units of the old currency are officially recommended. This does not prevent people using whatever names they may find convenient for any of the coins, as a matter of ordinary usage.

House adjourned at ten minutes past twelve o'clock.
