HC Deb 04 May 1971 vol 816 c313W
54 and 55. Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) whether the normal requirements for quarantine are enforced on ponies imported from the Continent for sale in this country;

(2) what are the arrangements made for examination by veterinary surgeons from the Ministry of Agriculture of ponies imported from the Continent.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

Imports of ponies are prohibited from sources where there is a risk of infection with African horse sickness. Imports from permitted sources, including mainland Europe, are allowed subject to veterinary certification by the exporting country. We do not require veterinary examination or quarantine of correctly certified ponies, but those arriving without the required veterinary certification are detained in isolation for examination and testing.
