§ Mr. Juddasked the Minister of State for Defence how many attempted suicides there have been in Portsmouth naval detention quarters since the introduction 281W of reforms in the administration of the quarters.
§ Mr. KirkNone. There have been occasional instances of self injury by men under sentence who are intent on attracting sympathy or attention to themselves, or achieving some other object. In all of these instances the man has ensured that a member of the staff is to hand by ringing his room bell or waiting until an instructor is in sight. Men who are considered likely to attempt self injury are sighted every 10 minutes. There have been 19 such cases of self injury since 1967.
