§ Mr. Oswaldasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what recent proposals to make the teaching profession more attractive in Scotland he has considered; and whether he will ensure higher incentives to teachers with added responsibilities.
§ Mr. Gordon CampbellI am consulting education authorities and teachers' associations on the proposals for an improved career structure for teachers set out in my Department's Memorandum "The Structure of Promoted Posts in Secondary Schools in Scotland" which was published on 4th February. I am also considering a proposal, made to me by the General Teaching Council, that graduates should be paid a salary during training. I also trust that the recent salary settlement concluded in the Scottish Teachers' Salaries Committee will help to make the profession more attractive.
