§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give details of police officers and their stated grades who were in October, 1964 on or near to a salary of £3,250 per annum, the various salary increases which have taken place on the stated dates, and what these salaries will be on the implementation of the new or proposed awards to the senior police officers.
§ Mr. SharplesThe officers paid at the stated salary in October, 1964 were chief constables of areas where the population was between 100,000 and 250,000 and deputy commanders in the Metropolitan Police. There are now no officers in England and Wales in either of these categories.
§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement on the 413W Government's acceptance of a 16 per cent. to 22 per cent. rise in salary for senior police chiefs, specifying to what extent the criterion of a higher award above the Government's norm for the lower paid police officers because of wastage and shortage of recruits was applied to senior police officers, and what shortage was last recorded; and whether he will give a detailed list of what these increases will mean in the various grades, and details of the various awards that have been paid since October, 1964, to these officers.
