Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what representations he has received from the china clay industry concerning the ending of investment grants;

(2) what he estimates will be the effect on investment in the china clay industry of the abolition of investment grants.

Mr. Ridley

We have received representations from a number of companies to the effect that they will receive less investment grant that they had expected when planning their capital development programmes; but there seems unlikely to be much effect on total capital expenditure by the industry.
