HC Deb 18 March 1971 vol 813 cc392-3W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimate he has made in the course of research into methods of maintaining and cleaning buildings, both external and internal, of the total sums spent in this field in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Amery

The total cost of the maintenance and cleaning of buildings in 1969 was estimated at £2,250 million; this covers maintenance, minor improvements, cleaning and expenditure by private householders on materials. Of this, cleaning was estimated at some £650 million; separate estimates are not available for external and internal cleaning.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what research and development is being done by Government research establishments on problems associated with the maintenance and cleaning of buildings; and what savings are expected to result from this.

Mr. Amery

The Building Research Station and the Forest Products Research Laboratory are carrying out research projects concerned with the maintenance and cleaning of buildings. The research is designed to improve the effectiveness and economy of maintenance operations.
