HC Deb 18 March 1971 vol 813 c374W
Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give an undertaking that the Metropolitan Police will always give to persons who are to be charged the opportunity to consult their solicitors between the time of arrest and the time when charges are preferred.

Mr. Maudling

The Commissioner of Police informs me that the practice of the Metropolitan police force accords with the principle I stated in reply to a Question today by the hon. Member for Kensington, North (Mr. Douglas-Mann).

Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases concerning the police at Barnet in 1970 and 1971 persons against whom charges have been preferred were denied access to their solicitor between the time of their arrest and the time when they were charged.

Mr. Maudling

The Commissioner of Police informs me that there have been two such cases.
