HC Deb 18 March 1971 vol 813 cc370-1W
Mr. Merlyn Rees

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what method of registration is prescribed for aliens in this country;

(2) what types of aliens, visitor or resident in this country, have to register; and where.

Mr. Sharples

Under the Aliens Order an alien of 16 or over may be required to register with the police if his stay in the United Kingdom is subject to a time limit. Paragraph 55 of Cmnd. 4296 (Aliens: Instructions to Immigration Officers) requires immigration officers to impose a condition requiring registration when admitting an alien unless admitting him free of conditions or for a period of three months or less. The broad effect is that aliens are required to register with the police unless they are visitors or have been accepted as residents. Registration takes place at police stations, or other premises designated by chief officers of police.
