Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what directions he gave to officials of his Department in July, 1970, regarding the business of the Vehicle and General Insurance Company Limited.

Mr. John Davies

No directions on this subject were given in July, 1970, to officials of the Board of Trade by Board of Trade Ministers.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) how many passengers were paid damages by the Vehicle and General Insurance Company Limited during the last period in respect of which figures are available; what was the average payment and what was their total;

(2) how many drivers were insured by the Vehicle and General Insurance Company Limited at the time when that company went into liquidation; and what was the total of premiums paid by them during the last period prior thereto in respect of which figures are available;

(3) how many claims were pending against drivers insured by the Vehicle and General Insurance Company Limited on the date when that company went into liquidation.

Mr. John Davies

The company had about 860,000 policy holders most of whom held motor-insurance policies. Its motor vehicle insurance income for 1970, after deduction of reinsurance, is believed to have been about £12,250,000. The other information requested is not available.
