HC Deb 15 March 1971 vol 813 cc244-5W
Mr. Merlyn Rees

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give the total sums of moneys advanced to private firms in each of the last five years, excluding that advanced under legislation designed to attract industry to development districts.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

The information requested by financial years is as follows:

£ million
1965–66 47
1966–67 9
1967–68 320
1968–69 509
1969–70 605

These figures comprise subsidies, current grants to private bodies, capital grants and net lending to the private sector under the trade, industry and employment programme and part of the transport programme. They exclude R.E.P., S.E.T. additional payments, expenditure on employment services and promotion of local employment, and loans to the Highlands and Islands Development Board. The whole of expenditure on investment grants is included although these grants had a regional differential.
