§ Mr. Coombsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total annual revenue received by way of income tax from all those below the national average wage; and what is the number of people involved.
§ Mr. Patrick JenkinI am not sure what my hon. Friend has in mind but on the basis that married couples are treated as one unit, the income tax paid by persons with an income from all sources below average male earnings (£1,450 a year) is approximately £1,300 million; there are about 10 million taxpayers with incomes below that level.
