HC Deb 12 March 1971 vol 813 c180W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister of State for Defence what is his policy with regard to further action taken following conviction of members of the three Services in the civil courts for driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs; and if he will detail the categories of action taken, and in what proportion, after convictions for this offence.

Mr. Kirk

Obviously, a serious view is taken of offences of the kind mentioned, but I cannot say what further action would be taken following conviction in a civil court. This would very much depend on the merits of each case and on the amount of discredit brought upon the Services.

As to the last part of the hon. Member's Question, statistics of cases dealt with by civil courts or of subsequent action are not available without a disproportionate amount of effort.
