§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT as detailed a list as may be readily available of the expenses and living away from home expenses, where appropriate, and car or travel allowances, where allowed, of civil servants who were, in October, 1964, on a salary of £3,250 per annum, giving details for 1964 and the present day.
§ Mr. David HowellA civil servant on a salary of £3,250 per annum in 1964 who worked away from his normal place of employment would have been paid a day subsistence allowance of 5s. 9d. for an absence of between five and 10 hours and 12s. 6d. for an absence of more than 10 hours. The current allowances are 42p and 93p, respectively. For an absence extending overnight, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave him on 2nd December, 1970.
A civil servant is also reimbursed the cost of public transport fares necessarily incurred, unless allowed to travel in his own private motor car. In 1964, the mileage allowance was 7½d. per mile for the first 7,000 miles of official travel in a year and 3¾d. per mile thereafter. The allowances are now related to engine capacity: 3.5p per mile for cars up to 1000 cc; 4.5p per mile for cars of 1001 cc; to 1750 cc; and 5.0p per mile for cars of over 1750 cc.—[Vol. 807, c. 395.]
