asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimate he has made of the population increase during the next 10 years and of the additional demands on housing that this will make.

The most up to date population projections are those based on the Registrar-General's mid-1969 population estimates and they indicate that the resident population of England and Wales will increase from 48.8 million in mid-1969 to 51.8 million in 1981. Over the same period, my Department estimate that the increase in household formation will be 1.4 million.
