asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will consider methods of assisting the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee to reduce the burden of tolls resulting from the cost of the new Mersey tunnels.

No. This is a matter for the local authorities concerned, under the provisions of the Mersey Tunnel Acts.

65. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he will be able to give permission to the Mersey Tunnel Joint Committee to raise the tolls on the new and old tunnels.

The Joint Committee's formal application for an increase in tolls was received on 26th February. A decision will be given as soon as possible.
