HC Deb 09 March 1971 vol 813 cc61-2W
37. Mr. Michael Shaw

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer which of the nine Inland Revenue computer centres are already operational; to which areas they relate; and where and when he intends the remaining centres to be brought into operation.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Only Centre 1 at East Kilbride which deals with P.A.Y.E. work in Scotland is operational so far. Present plans are to begin taking on work at Bootle early in 1972 and at Cardiff in 1973. It is too soon to say how the remainder of the programme will be affected by the review of mechanisation which I announced on 7th December, 1970.

Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer who in his Department will have access to data stored at his proposed Pay As You Earn computer centres.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Only about 30 computer and programming staff at each centre, together with senior management and selected head office staff, are allowed access to the magnetic tape records. But, of course, other staff dealing with the liabilities of individual taxpayers need to be supplied with relevant information about them.

Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he will announce the location and starting dates of his proposed pay As You Earn computer centres.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Centre 1 at East kilbride is operational, and it is planned to begin taking on work at Bootle early in 1972 and at Cardiff in 1973. Decisions about the remaining centres must await the outcome of the review of the tax system which I announced in the House on 7th December, 1970.
