asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the fact that rail fares are to rise by amounts varying between 7 per cent. and 66 per cent. and that this is against the Government's policy, he will restore the cuts which Her Majesty's Government have made in the subsidies to British Rail.

No. The only relevant cuts which have so far been announced relate to the London commuter services, on which the Government's policy is that the costs should be borne by the users rather than by the Exchequer.
