HC Deb 08 March 1971 vol 813 cc49-50W
Sir Clive Bossom

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the numbers of level crossings on trunk and principal roads; and how many of these are automatic half-barrier level crossings.

Mr. Peyton

81 on trunk roads and about 450 on principal roads in England. 17 have automatic half-barriers.

Sir Clive Bossom

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what applications he has under consideration for the provision of automatic half-barriers at level crossings on trunk and principal roads; and what plans he has to build bridges or underpasses to replace such level crossings.

Mr. Peyton

I am considering proposals for an automatic half-barrier level crossing on the A17(T) trunk road at Swineshead. No other formal applications for automatic half-barriers on trunk or principal roads are currently being considered in the Department.

Highway authorities' plans for replacing level crossings by bridges would usually be embodied in larger schemes. There are no plans at present to replace any level crossings on trunk roads in England by bridges.
