Mr. Denzil Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of all children over two years of age and under five years of age are attending maintained nursery schools in each county and county borough of Wales.

The numbers of children aged 2, 3 and 4 years attending maintained nursery schools in Wales in January, 1970, expressed as a percentage of the estimated total numbers in those age groups were as follows:

The remaining eight authorities had no maintained nursery schools at that time

In addition, all local education authorities in Wales admit children to primary schools under 5 years of age. The proportion of these age groups ill maintained primary schools at that date is estimated to be as follows:

2 years 0.07 per cent.
3 years 6.3 per cent.
4 years 57 per cent.

All local education authorities in Wales admit children to primary schools under 5 years of age. Nine authorities also maintain nursery schools, and in 1969–70 the expenditure of each of these authorities on these schools was as follows:
