asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many inspections were carried out by his Department into the safety of British vessels operating on the Irish Sea routes in 1970.

Annual surveys as required by the Merchant Shipping Acts were carried out by the Department during 1970 on 24 British passenger ships operating on the regular services across the Irish Sea. This figure includes eight ships serving the Isle of Man.
