HC Deb 08 March 1971 vol 813 cc23-4W
98. Mr. Robert Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Com- monwealth Affairs why the United Kingdom representative on the Western European Union Council of Ministers did not object to the proposal by the West German Government to construct and supply four submarines to the Greek Government, which would normally require the unanimous consent of the Council under the Brussels Treaty.

Mr. Anthony Royle

The Council of the Western Europen Union was not called upon to take any action on the decision of the Federal Republic of Germany to supply four submarines to Greece. The Council took note of the Federal Republic's intention to use a quota of six submarines granted in an amendment to Protocol No. III to the Revised Brussels Treaty in 1963, and no further amendment was requested.
