HC Deb 08 March 1971 vol 813 cc38-9W
Mr. Roger White

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many British subjects emigrated from the United Kingdom to India, Pakistan, East Africa, Nigeria and Ghana, respectively, in the years 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970.

Sir K. Joseph

The only relevant figures are derived from the International Passenger Survey, in which, however, the sample is too small to make possible reliable estimates for each of the individual countries specified.

The following tables gives figures for country groups, as published by the Registrar General:

NUMBER OF EMIGRANTS FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM HOLDING UNITED KINGDOM PASSPORTS*
(Thousands}
Year ended 30th June To African Commonwealth Countries To India/Pakistan/Ceylon
1966 9.7 3.2
1967 12.1 2.0
1968 11.2 2.6
1969 12.1 2.7
1970 11.8 2.4
* An emigrant is defined in the International Passenger Survey as a person who, having resided in the United Kingdom for at least one year, intends to remain at least one year in the country of destination.
† Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
