HC Deb 08 March 1971 vol 813 c50W
Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the value of grants made by his Department to British Rail in respect of the London area and the rest of Great Britain, respectively; and what percentage is the total of these sums in relation to British Rail's total deficit in the last accounting year.

Mr. Peyton

The grants payable in 1970 for unremunerative rail passenger services in the London Commuter Network and in the rest of Great Britain totalled£14.5 million and£47.3 million respectively. The Railways Board's accounts for 1970 are expected to show a small surplus.
