asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will tabulate the current salary scales for teachers; and state approximately how many teachers come within each category.

The current salary scales for teachers in maintained establishments in England and Wales are contained in the following published documentsScales of Salaries for Teachers in Primary and Secondary Schools, England and Wales 1969. Scales of Salaries for the Teaching Staff of Farm Institutes and for Teachers of Agricultural (including Horticultural) Subjects, England and Wales 1969. Report of the Committee on Scales of Salaries for the Teaching Staff of Colleges of Education, England and Wales 1969.

The rates of salary shown in these documents were increased by £120 per annum from 1st April, 1970.

Analyses by salary grading of teachers in full-time service at 31st March, 1968, the latest date for which the statistics have been published, are contained in tables 21, 31 and 38 of Statistics of Education, 1968, volume 4. The 1969 volume is to be published shortly.
