HC Deb 04 March 1971 vol 812 cc516-7W
Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether non-European employees at the Simonstown base are subject to job classification under the laws enforcing apartheid.

Mr. Kershaw

I am awaiting a reply to inquiries made on this matter through Her Majesty's Ambassador in Cape Town.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Africans are included in the 713 non-European employees at the Simonstown base.

Mr. Kershaw

There are 1,231 nonwhite employees at the Simonstown Base; of these 113 are described as Bantu. This figure does, however, vary as casual labour is used from time to time.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) how many non-Europeans are employed in supervisory or managerial jobs at the Simonstown base:

(2) what are the categories of employment of the 854 Europeans and 1,231 non-Europeans employed at the Simonstown base:

(3) how many European casual labourers are employed in the Simonstown base.

Mr. Kershaw

This information is not available, and I have, therefore, instructed Her Majesty's Ambassador in Cape Town to ask the South African authorities if they will provide it.
