§ 63. Mr. John Hallasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what amount has been spent over the last 10 years on research into the causes and prevention of mental disorders; and what sums have been allocated for this purpose over each of the next five years.
§ Mrs. ThatcherThe Medical Research Council has supported a wide programme of research on mental disorders, associated psychological studies and basic studies in neurobiology, at an expenditure of £8,424,000 over 10 years, to 1970–71. It is not possible to forecast expenditure for future years.
Other substantial provision in this field from Government sources is made by the Health Departments and hospital boards and through the University Grants Committee's funds in universities and medical 504W schools. Useful support is provided by several voluntary agencies.
