Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number of Commonwealth citizens who are citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies resident in this country who have been resident for the last five years, and who have not been resident for the last five years, respectively.

Mr. Sharples

I regret this information is not available.

Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number of citizens of the United Kingdom and colonies resident in the United Kingdom who are such by reason of their birth or association with territories outside the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Mr. Sharples

At the census of 1961, 206,000 people said that they had been born in what were then colonies and protectorates, and that they were citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies by birth or descent. It is not known how many of these people are still here, or how many have since changed their citizenship.

Between 1st July, 1962, and 31st December, 1970, the number admitted for settlement of people associated with existing colonies, together with United Kingdom passport holders made subject to control under the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, 1968, was 98,939.
