asked the Attorney-General whether he will list the laws of the United Kingdom and the laws of Northern Ireland under which the present security operations by Her Majesty's forces in Northern Ireland are carried out.

I have been asked to reply.

Her Majesty's Forces in Northern Ireland are operating at the request of the civil authorities and in accordance with the common law and appropriate statutes applying to them in Northern Ireland. Members of the Regular Forces are subject to military law and to the civil law of Northern Ireland at all times. If the hon. Member has a particular case in mind, I shall be, happy to cite the legal authority.
