HC Deb 17 June 1971 vol 819 cc122-3W
Mr. Wall

asked the Minister of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the progress of Harrier trials from ships of the Fleet.

Mr. Kirk

The trials carried out in H.M.S. "Ark Royal" from 4th to 15th May were to evaluate the implications of deploying the Harrier in an operational environment at sea. A total of 57 aircraft sorties were flown, including 21 in which the aircraft carried weapons. The procedures for controlling aircraft from the ship were thoroughly tested and all aspects of operation were examined.

The results of these trials are now being studied. They will be taken into account during the examination which is being made to establish whether this aircraft, in a maritime rôle, can meet our particular requirements. I can assure my hon. Friend that there is no lack of urgency and we realise the interest that other countries are showing. But there are many factors to be considered and it would be wrong not to look at them very seriously.

My noble friend will keep the House informed of further progress.
