asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the amount of the excise tax on hydrocarbon oils which is borne ultimately by the steel industry.

Mr. Higgins

The total amount of duty paid in 1970 on hydrocarbon oil purchased by the steel industry was probably of the order of £14 million.
