§ Mr. CarlisleThe direct expenditure on maintenance and improvements was £5,612 in 1968–69, £5,614 in 1969–70 and £18,420 in 1970–71. It is not possible to give separately the expenditure relating solely to improvements. Up to 31st August, 1970, the figures represent the cost of materials only, since the work was carried out by inmates and Prison Department staff. The amount paid to a contractor in 1970–71 for work since that date has been included.
