HC Deb 23 July 1971 vol 821 c377W
Mr. Emery

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what further steps he has to take in order to ensure that travellers on trunk roads are informed of the refreshment, garage and other facilities available in service towns.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

My right hon. Friend has recently launched, with the co-operation of the local authorities, a limited experiment to determine the usefulness of signs giving information to motorists about services that are readily available in towns that have been bypassed. The first of these signs have been erected on the trunk road approaches to Honiton and others will be erected at Stamford and Kendal. Each sign comprises a map of the town together with information about services and car parks, etc.

If the experiment proves successful consideration will be given to providing similar signs on the approaches to other bypassed towns.
