HC Deb 20 July 1971 vol 821 cc256-7W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is aware of the dangerous conditions existing on the A550 at Gladstone Way, Hawarden; what representation about it he has received from the local authorities concerned; if he will sanction the installation of 30 mile per hour repeater signs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Thomas

The hon. Member wrote to me on this matter in April but otherwise I have received no representations. I am aware, however, that Flintshire County Council, which is the authority responsible for speed limits on this principal road, has been approached on a number of occasions.

The erection of repeater 30 m.p.h. traffic signs is expressly prohibited by the Traffic Signs (Speed Limits) Regulations and General Directions, 1969, where, as on this road, there is a system of street lighting with the lamps not more than 200 yards apart. The lamps themselves should provide a sufficient indication to drivers that the road is subject to a 30 m.p.h. speed limit.
