§ Mr. Carlisle: The number of indictable offences known to the police in England and Wales in 1962 was 896,424 and in 1970 1,555,995. These figures are not 210W directly comparable because of the effect on the statistics of the Theft Act, 1968, which came into force on 1st January, 1969.

§ Mr. Carlisle: Non-indictable offences are not recorded : the number of persons proceeded against for non-indictable offences in England and Wales in 1962 was 1,107,134 and in 1970 it was 1,426,059. These figures are not directly comparable because of the effect on the statistics of the Theft Act, 1968, which came into force on 1st January, 1969.
