§ Mr. Onslowasked the Minister of State for Defence how he accounts for the increase of 390 in the staff of his Department in the period 1st July to 1st November, 1970; and what increase or decrease he now anticipates in the period up to 30th June, 1971.
§ Lord BalnielThere was no increase in the total number of civilians employed by the Ministry of Defence. The apparent increase of 390 non-industrials was due to the grant of non-industrial status to some 400 chargemen of skilled labourers, previously classified as industrial employees.
It is not yet possible to forecast the change expected by 30th June, 1971, as the staff estimates for the financial year beginning 1st April, 1971, are still under consideration.
