asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what notification of increases in fertiliser prices he has received and of the impending increase later this year; and if he will set up an inquiry to investigate the cost structure of the fertiliser industry.

In accordance with the arrangements we have made with them, the leading fertiliser manufacturers notified us in advance of the price changes which they have recently announced and, I am confident, will so inform us of any proposals for any future increases.

I see no need for a special investigation into the industry's cost structure, upon which I am already informed.
