§ Sir R. Russellasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the fact that in 1969 three deaths of children under 16 years of age occurred in school or college swimming pools, and that a further death occurred in the River Thames during a school swimming test, she will request local education authorities to draw the attention of schools to Education Pamphlet No. 53, especially the section on swimming and the need to observe local regulations regarding swimming instruction.
§ Mrs. ThatcherThose responsible for swimming instruction are generally very well aware of the need for close supervision of pupils during swimming lessons and tests. Teachers are constantly reminded of it by local branches of the English Schools Swimming Association, to which very many schools belong.
